Do solar street lights need PPTC overcurrent protection?

Time:2024-07-12 Views:

Yes, solar street lights do require PPTC overcurrent protection. This is an important safety measure that helps prevent damage to the lights

and ensures their longevity.

Today, when we advocate the vigorous development of green energy, solar photovoltaic power generation is one of the green energy sources that the world is competing to develop and utilize. In recent years, in addition to vigorously building large-scale solar power stations, my

country will also invest hundreds of billions of RMB to develop solar LED street lights. During the 12th Five-Year Plan, Guangdong Province

alone will invest more than 100 billion RMB in the construction of solar LED street lights, which is a huge LED photovoltaic industry.

The solar LED street light system consists of solar panels, batteries, charge and discharge conversion circuits, LED light-emitting parts, etc. As

far as the system itself is concerned, each functional circuit or device works independently and in a very unstable light and heat environment.

For example, the instability of sunlight intensity, the instability of temperature, the instability of the voltage and current conversion circuit of

the circuit system and the heat generation during operation will cause fatigue and accelerated aging of circuit components and shorten their

lifespan.

Some solar LED street lights will fail prematurely due to short circuits caused by vibration during transportation or incorrect installation wiring. During production and debugging, short circuits may also burn out devices and equipment. In the work of street lights, we must require

high stability of LED light intensity to achieve the purpose of highway lighting, which requires us to deal with the above problems.

There are many ways to solve the above problems. The simplest way is to use glass fuses for overcurrent protection between the battery and

the conversion circuit, and between the conversion circuit and the LED lamp, and use temperature fuses or bimetallic thermostats for

overtemperature protection.

Electronic circuits can also be used as detection and protection modules to achieve the purpose of protecting the circuit. Each has its own

advantages and disadvantages. Glass fuses and temperature fuses are disposable, which are prone to frequent replacement and

inconvenience. Bimetallic thermostats are prone to reconnecting faulty loads without power failure and expanding the fault range. Electronic

circuits have high sensitivity and may cause false operation, high cost and low reliability.

To solve the problems of timely protection against over-temperature, over-current and short-circuit without replacing fuses, reconnecting

faulty circuits after protection, and reducing costs, only PPTC can achieve this goal. Therefore, it is recommended to use PPTC components

for over-current and over-temperature protection of solar LED street lights.
